Bronze Star awarded for bravery in action during the period 25 APR 1945 - 27 APR 1945 while building a diversionary bridge intended to draw the enemy's attention away from the main objective to the north of the bridge site. PFC Merrill showed extreme bravery in the face of many direct threats against himself and his comrades. To include artillery, mortar and small arms fire.
